For the past four years, AF Racing Team has been a mainstay in the world of rallycross. Founded by brothers David (the boss) and Alejandro (the driver) Fernández, the squad debuted in Red Bull Global Rallycross for the 2014 season. Immediately, the small startup team established itself as a podium threat, earning multiple trophies on the way to finishing near the top of the championship table.
After bringing on some of the most experienced and talented personnel in the business, AF expanded to multiple cars the next year and has since become a top destination for drivers looking to break into the sport. Now, the team is ready to go. to the next level in 2018 and beyond.
HISTORY: EXPERIENCED AF
Intrigued by what they saw in its inaugural 2013 season, brothers David and Alejandro Fernández jumped into GRC Lites for 2014 as one of a number of full-time entries. After a brief period of acclimation to the new sport, Alejandro became a consistent front-runner in the series, taking home trophies from the team’s home race in Los Angeles and the popular Seattle stop. The top-ranked rookie in the class, Fernández finished an impressive third in points and won his first Fan Favorite Driver award.
Chasing a championship
The rallycross world had taken notice of what the startup AF Racing Team could do in 2014, and in response, NASCAR and A1GP veteran Nur Ali would bring major sponsorship to the team for its second season to partner with Fernández, now an established championship threat. After coming tantalizingly close to victory in a Detroit photo finish, the message was clear: the young team wasn’t just out to play around with the rest of Red Bull Global Rallycross’ future stars. It was there to win.
A talented trio
Looking to make the switch from other disciplines to rallycross, karting star Christian Brooks and off-road prodigy Travis PeCoy joined Fernández on the now three-car AF Racing Team. The new grouping was a learning arrangement for all three drivers, as Fernández learned more about how to coach his teammates and Brooks and PeCoy absorbed all the information they could. In the end, it was PeCoy who would reach the podium first, doing so in Atlantic City and scoring the team’s best finish of 2016.
A new beginning
With the team refocused on a single car for most of the season, Fernández returned to the top of the charts with a pole in Atlantic City and multiple heat victories. But the other names who sampled AF Racing Team machinery in 2017 walked away impressed with what they saw. Burt Jenner and Matt Halliday posted solid lap times in Memphis and Indianapolis, respectively, while sports car ace Gustavo Yacaman qualified first and finished third in Louisville, despite only testing a Lites car once, in 2013.
Loenbro Motorsports: A talent pipeline
Beginning with the 2017 season, AF Racing Team has formed a partnership with experienced rallycross team Loenbro Motorsports to provide drivers with a path to the upper echelons of the sport. Owned by brothers Paul and Jon Leach and led by veteran driver Steve Arpin, the team finished an impressive third in Red Bull GRC Supercar points in 2017. Loenbro Motorsports currently has a technical partnership with Hoonigan Racing Division and Ken Block to compete in the new Americas Rallycross series in 2018.
