2016 Season review: Christian Brooks

RESULTS: 5th, Lites; 288 points
STATS: 11 starts, best finish 4th, 1 heat win

IN BRIEF: He wasn’t quite in the championship hunt at the end of the season, but Brooks’ rookie GRC Lites season was impressive nonetheless. The karting veteran, in his first season with the AF Racing Team, led the three-car outfit at fifth in the championship standings on the strength of a consistent first half of the season and frequent shots at top-three results.

Pecoy continues second half surge first career GRC lites podium

California’s Travis PeCoy was one of more than half a dozen rookies to step into GRC Lites this year, joining the AF Racing Team as part of a three-driver effort alongside Alejandro Fernandez and Christian Brooks. But unlike his teammates, both of whom started their racing careers in karting, PeCoy came from the world of off-road racing; instead of having to adapt to driving on loose surfaces, he’d need to make the shift to tracks with more pavement than dirt.

Teammate vs. teammate: Af Racing Team

The AF Racing Team holds a special distinction in the Red Bull Global Rallycross paddock: the largest full-time team to be focused solely on GRC Lites. Now in its third season, the team has grown steadily since its humble beginnings in 2014 as a single-car entry with driver Alejandro Fernandez.

The team grew to two cars last year with Nur Ali, then brought in rookies Christian Brooks and Travis PeCoy to comprise a three-car effort in 2016. While the team remains in search of its first victory, its drivers have given them plenty to be hopeful about with gradual progress toward the front of the pack.

2016 mid-season review: Travis Pecoy

STATS (through 6 of 12 rounds): 12th in Lites points (83); 6 starts, best finish 5th

POSITIVES: One of two rookies on the AF Racing Team in 2016, PeCoy has had to adapt his driving style more heavily to GRC Lites than rookie teammate Christian Brooks. While Brooks comes from a karting background, PeCoy’s past experience is centered on short course off-road, providing him an advantage in the dirt but less so on the larger paved portions of Red Bull GRC courses.

2016 Mid-season review: Alejandro Fernandez

STATS (through 6 of 12 rounds): 7th in GRC Lites points (110); 6 starts, best finish 5th

POSITIVES: As the Lites field gets deeper and deeper every season, there remains a single constant: Fernandez making it to main events and challenging for solid finishes. The Colombian driver, who entered 2016 as the top point-scorer in class history, showed he can make good things happen regardless of the contact-heavy nature of rallycross with a last chance qualifier victory at Marine Corps Air Station New River.

2016 Mid season review: Christian Brooks

STATS (through 6 of 12 rounds): 5th in GRC Lites points (167); 6 starts, best finish 4th

POSITIVES: Quietly, Brooks has become a respectable driver and constant final presence as the highest-ranking of three drivers on the AF Racing Team. The karting veteran made it to the first five main events of the season, contending for podiums and posting a best finish of fourth in Phoenix and Dallas, while also inching closer to his first heat victory with a runner-up result in the final Daytona heat.

Christian Brooks: “We’re shooting for the championship”

Christian Brooks may be a newcomer to GRC Lites, but he’s no stranger to some of its key players. A longtime teammate of Alejandro Fernandez in the karting ranks, he’ll be joining AF Racing this year to race alongside Fernandez and Travis Pecoy.
